Stress is a much used and often misunderstood word in our society. Stress is actually good for us. We need it to survive; to achieve our deadlines, to experience fulfilment and satisfaction. We need those hormones coursing around our blood stream to heighten our performance and enable us to be the best we can be.
Consciously we know the difference between physical stress, mental stress or emotional stress but our bodies don't. It reacts in exactly the same way - there's a threat to our wellbeing and the body is hard-wired to deal with it.
So whether it's high level intensity or low level fatigue, whether we step out in front of car or just can't seem to get on top of things, the adrenal glands will be pumping out adrenalin and other hormones, which is why it's so hard to relax and switch off. Sleep eludes us and our digestive systems misbehave.
